The Use of Synthetic Analogues of Prostaglandins for Inducing Luteolysis in Mares
نویسندگان
چکیده
The potency, toxicity and clinical value of two synthetic analogues of Prostaglandin F2(ICI-7()939 and ICI-8ioo8) for inducing luteolysis in mares is discussed. Measurement of peripheral plasma progestagen levels in over 4oo Thoroughbred mares has demonstrated that abnormal persistence of luteal function (prolonged dioestrus) is the major cause of the failure of nonpregnant mares to exhibit regular oestrous cycles during the breeding season. Results of the clinical use of ICI-8ioo8 (u Equimate a) for inducing oestrus and ovulation in Thoroughbred mares in prolonged dioestrus in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres are presented.

Synchronization of Oestrus in Cattle, Sheep and Goats Using a Prostaglandin Analogue
Prostaglandin F~(Y, (PGF2a) causes luteolysis in several species of animals including cattle and sheep. This has led to investigations with PGF2a as an agent for the control of oestrus and ovulation in domestic animals (Inskeep 1973) and to comparison of PGF2a and progestins as practical methods of synchronizing oestrus in cattle (Smith 1973). This paper reports preliminary studies of the use o...

Evaluation of a new chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay, the PATHFAST assay system (PATHFAST), for measurement of circulating progesterone in mares was performed. Five mares at the mid-luteal stage were administrated a single i.m. injection of prostaglandin F2α analog (PGF2α; cloprostenol 250 μg/ml), and then blood samples were collected from the jugular vein at 0, 15, 30 and 45 min, at one-hou...
متن کاملFollicular growth and estradiol influence on luteal function in mares.
Follicular growth, circulating estradiol concentrations and endometrial prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) production were measured to determine whether there is an interrelationship among these factors associated with luteolysis. Follicular growth was monitored by rectal palpation every other day during diestrus in 16 mares. Plasma estradiol was determined for daily samples during all estrous...
متن کاملExpression of Aldo-keto Reductase 1C23 in the Equine Corpus Luteum in Different Luteal Phases
Regression of the corpus luteum (CL) is characterized by a decay in progesterone (P4) production (functional luteolysis) and disappearance of luteal tissues (structural luteolysis). In mares, structural luteolysis is thought to be caused by apoptosis of luteal cells, but functional luteolysis is poorly understood. 20α-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (20α-HSD) catabolizes P4 into its biologically i...
متن کاملUse of Prostaglandin F2 for Controlling the Mare’s Estrous Cycle
Prostaglandins belong to a group of modified longchain fatty acids containing 20 carbons called eicosanoids. The cyclooxygenase pathway uses prostaglandin synthases to convert arachidonic acid into prostaglandins. Arachidonic acid is available through the hydrolysis of phospholipids present in the cell membrane. The breakdown of membrane phopholipids is catalyzed by the enzyme phospholipase A. ...
